It is important to note that pica often occurs in herds that are thriving &amp; healthy. Low dietary fibre in the cow\u2019s diet, due to the rapidly growing grass during the breeding season can also cause pica. Typically associated with drought conditions and poor P index soils, a cold\/dry spell in April\/May can exacerbate the issue.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"tabscontent\" id=\"show_tab-3\">\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3>Problems from PICA in Cattle<\/h3>\n<p>Pica can lead to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Loose dung<\/li>\n<li>Reduced \u2018cudding\u2019 and therefore saliva production, which can result in ruminal acidosis due to the decreased buffering from saliva within the rumen<\/li>\n<li>Reduced milk fats due to a change in the balance of fatty acids being produced by a more acidic rumen<\/li>\n<li>Feed intake drops and therefore milk production suffers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t<\/div>\r\n<\/section>\n\n\r\n<section class=\"content-with-product noverflow  backgroundcolour--white \">\r\n<div class=\"container\">\r\n\t<div class=\"columns is-marginless\">\r\n\t\t<!-- \/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/ \/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/-->\r\n\t\t<div class=\"column is-half contentsection\">\r\n\t\t\t<div class=\"hundheight level\">\r\n\t\t\t<div class=\"inner posrel noverflow\">\r\n\t\t\t<p class=\"maintitle\">Pica in Cattle &#8211; Treatment <\/p>\t\t\t<div class=\"contento nicescroll\"><p>Give cows access to a source of long fibre such as straw, hay or stemmy silage in the paddock or near the collecting yard<br \/>\nFeed Additional Phosphorus.<br \/>\nExtra sodium (salt blocks) can aid in reducing the problem of pica.<br \/>\nIt is recommended to take blood samples from the herd to diagnose if there is a phosphorous deficiency present. <\/p>\n<p>Phosphorous can be easily added through the drinking water and will rectify the deficiency in a relatively short time period.
