Which Minerals?
Minerals play a vital role in animal health, so maintaining optimum vitamin, mineral and supplement levels in your herd will ensure strong animal performance, growth, health and ultimately help the profitability of your farm.
It’s crucial that you understand the specific nutritional needs of your herd before you start supplementing their diet. It’s important to understand the delicate balance between deficiencies and oversupply of minerals, and oversupply can result in toxicity. Symptoms of mineral deficiencies in your herd can be varied, nonspecific and typically will require more thorough investigation. Our recommended approach is below.
Cycle of Science
Herd Health
Evaluate blood, milk profiles, herd history, breed, yield, vet and nutritionist input.
Feed Profile
Evaluate blood, milk profiles, herd history, breed, yield, vet and nutritionist input.
Analysis and Formulation
Evaluate all data to create an optimum mineral mix.

Mineral & Dosing SystemsHerd Health
First, the herd health and history should be taken into consideration – including all relevant factors such as calving, fertility, the occurrence of lameness, mastitis, typical cell count etc. We recommend that you conduct Blood and Milk Mineral profiles, where the macro and micro-nutrients levels are verified by a spectrometer in an independent lab. Liver Biopsies can also be performed by a qualified vet to establish current mineral levels.
We recommend evaluating samples for the following minerals:
- Copper
- Magnesium
- Phosphorus
- Cobalt
- Calcium
- Iodine
- Selenium
- Zinc
Vet and nutritionist input can also help to build a true picture of the issues and status of the herd in relation to minerals.
Herd Diet
After looking at the animal, the focus now turns to their diet and how their feeding patterns change throughout the year. We recommend that full mineral profiling is conducted on any forage and drinking water on the farm. It is also important to analyse the labels of any existing feed supplements, so it’s clear what minerals the animal is already consuming.
Once you have a clear picture of the herd health, and their diet, we can help formulate a mineral blend that will address your herd’s specific nutritional requirements and will in turn aid optimal health and production.
